WINTERIZING YOUR POND

PLANTS:
- Remove dead or dying vegetation. If left it produces a
toxic gas when trapped under ice.
- In October remove floating aquatic plants, theyre
not hardy.
- Submerged Aquatic Plants should be removed and compost
or cut back to 2-4 tall. Hornwort, Dwarf Saggitaria
and Vallisneria are hardy. Anacharis will survive some years.
- Hardy marginals can be cut back and placed back into water.
Roots should not be allowed to freeze solid.
- Bring Tropical marginals into house and put in a sunny
location. Treat it like a houseplant.
FISH:
- Switch to a low protein fish food; stop feeding at 45 degrees
Fahrenheit.
- Inspect fish for disease and parasites
- Keep a hole in the ice
o A pond heater should run every 4 days for 24 hours to allow
gases to escape. The heaters are low wattage and thermostatically
controlled.
o Run a pump or aerator in shallow area of pond
PUMPS:
- Clean and store pumps in bucket of water in basement or
somewhere it will not freeze.
- Store pump in softened water
- Shut off and remove pump when water temperature is between
40 50 degrees.
- Take out filters for winter, clean and store.
FILTERS:
- Clean biological filter when water stays below 50 degrees.
OTHER:
- Cover your pond with our debris nets making spring clean-up
