Common Asked QuestionsQ: HYDRANGEA HELP!!! Why don't my hydrangeas bloom?A: Many varieties of hydrangeas bloom on old wood, pruning the old, dead looking wood in the spring will cut off the flower buds. Only prune big leaf hydrangeas as soon as the blooms fade. Fertilize with Holly-Tone Fertilizer to help promote flower bud development and deeper colored flowers. Espoma Garden Sulfur is a natural acidifier and will turn your hydrangeas a striking blue! Q: SHADY AREAS! What are some good plants for shady areas? A: Perennials: Astilbe, Lady’s Mantle, Hosta, Lung Wort, European Wild Ginger, Carex Grasses, and Foxglove. Shrubs: Summersweet, Holly, Pieris, Rhododendron, Common Sweet Shrub, Big Leaf Hydrangea, and Oakleaf Hydrangea, and Winter Gem Boxwood. Trees: (Good under story trees with scattered sunlight) Dogwood, White Fringetree, and Eastern Red Bud. Don’t forget to add extra interest with boulders, benches, birdbaths and other statuary! Also, you can mulch the entire area and place large decorative pots around filled with colorful annuals such as impatiens or torenia. Q: MAGNOLIA HELP! What is the white fungus looking stuff growing on the stems of my magnolia tree? A: Magnolia Scale. This insect is underneath that white covering. In the early spring and late fall use the Bonide Horticultural Oil. In the summer when the insect is active spray it with Bonide Eight insecticide. The leaves and areas under the tree may have black soot that can be rubbed off; this is frass from the insect. Magnolia Scale will not kill the tree immediately, but it will weaken it if it’s not controlled. Q: LAWN TIPS! When do I fertilize my lawn? A: EMIL for a 4-step program E– Easter (I prefer Tax Day – April 15th is more accurate) M- Memorial Day I - Independence Day (July 4th) L- Labor Day If you’re doing the 2-step program, wait to apply the first step until you see dandelions blooming. Apply the second step in the fall. Q: MOLE TROUBLE! How do I get rid of moles in my lawn? A: Remember that moles love to eat earthworms along with the grubs. If you have a grub problem, treat that first to lesson the mole problem. Second, you can choose to set traps in the main runs. And continue to use the Mole Max once every season. Mole Max is a granular that you apply to your beds and lawn to push out the moles. There are a lot of products to push moles out, stop in for details! |
