Columnar shaped trees give a great frame to a 2-story house.

A tree with horizontal branching planted off the end of the home, can give the illusion of a longer (larger) house.

Weeping trees add year round interest! These trees can be found in flowering varieties or evergreen.

Many homeowners worry about the roots being too invasive when they plant trees near the home. Well, good news, the nightmare of Silver Maples is over! Many new varieties of trees will not cause harm to foundations, sidewalks or patios.

Don't believe everything you read in Magazines, Garden Books and on the Internet! Although information may tell you that the mature size of a tree is 65', remember that this may not be true to our area. Ask your nursery professional what the 10 year size of the tree will be and plan your landscape around that.

Favorite Trees for Every Season

CORNELIAN CHERRY DOGWOOD

Cornus mas

Don’t let the name and flowers confuse you. This really is a Dogwood. Cornelian Cherry, Cornus mas, is one of the earliest blooming of all plants in Northwest Ohio.

Beautiful yellow flowers on thin stems make this a striking accent tree. We’ve used Cornelian Cherry Dogwoods in front of evergreens to really show off the early yellow color, it’s a sure sign that spring is coming. In the fall this dogwood has small decorative red fruits that our feathered friends enjoy.

Cornelian Cherry is a Dogwood that can be planted in heavier soils such as clay.

Cornelian Cherry may reach a height of around 20 feet with about the same spread. Plant this tree in full sun or part shade. We currently stock this and many other Dogwood varieties.

PLANTING TIP

When planting trees in heavy soil such as clay, mix topsoil and/or peat moss with existing soil and always leave the root ball up just above existing soil level. Always mulch with shredded hardwood no more than 2 inches.

FLOWERING CRABAPPLE TREES

Limited space areas in today’s’ smaller landscape call for dwarf slower growing trees. Many varieties of the flowering crabapple come to the rescue.

Lollipop, Royal Gem, Guinevere, Sargentina, just to name a few. Most will reach a height of just 8’ with a similar spread and very slow growth rate. Perfect for those tight spaces.

We use Crabapples in courtyards, by patios, and/or small corner accents. The trees just don’t need a whole lot of attention.

We also sell many of the larger varieties of Crabapples that are disease resistant. Stop by and see our selections!

BUTTERFLY MAGNOLIA

This Magnolia gets its name from the yellow flower it carries up and down the stem looking like little butterflies.

Butterfly Magnolias can reach a height of 25’ with a narrower spread. We use them as a small lawn tree or as a corner foundation plant. This tree will attract your attention, as you do not see many yellow magnolias.

We also have many more Magnolia varieties to help accent a small or larger space in your landscape. Give us a call or better yet, stop out!

TIPS ON MAGNOLIAS

They can attract oyster shell scale, which can be easily taken care of with Bonide All Seasons Oil.

Maples

Acer sp.

If you’re looking for a nicely shaped shade tree for your yard or landscape, try a maple. From the experience that Ken has with his Norwegian Sunset Maple, he assures you that you will not be disappointed.

Maple trees develop glorious colors of reds and yellows in the fall. There are many varieties of maples including the Red Sunset Maple turning a brilliant red in fall. The fast growing Autumn Blaze Maple is a clean reddish orange color. Sugar Maples such as the Legacy turn an amazing yellow. Maples are shade trees tolerant to most landscape conditions. Their heights and widths vary depending on the variety.

Serviceberry

Amelanchier sp.

This is one of Jenny’s favorite trees. The Serviceberry grows as a single-stem or multi-stem specimen. You can plant it to naturalize an area in your yard or prune it to give a more formal effect up near the home. In early spring, the tree is covered with dainty white flowers. During summer you’ll enjoy the clean look of the dark green foliage. The real beauty of this tree is in the fall. You can stand under this tree and feel as though you’re glowing from the bright colors of red to yellow to bronze. In addition, you enjoy the onset of fruit. The birds will love you for this. The green fruit turn to bright red. The sweet taste makes them great for pies as long as you get them before our feathered friends!

Sweetgum

Liquidambar styraciflua

This lovely tree should be on every gardener’s wish list. The Sweetgum is excellent in moist soils such as the land along streams, but will also tolerate dry conditions. This tree gives beautiful shape reaching heights of 45-50’ and up. Some cultivars shed a spiny fruit, however we now carry a fruitless variety! Rotundiloba Sweetgum. Next to the large shiny leaves and the massive size of the beautiful tree – you’ll love the bright fall colors. The shades of yellow, orange, red and purple persist into late fall.
